If you鈥檝e noticed the pots of flowers and plants recently blooming outside Bredon House, you have Philip De Luca to thank.

A gardener at 明星黑料 for the past twenty-three years, Philip has chosen and arranged a selection of flowers and plants that, to him, best embody spring, with the idea of creating a display that will thrive until the end of the season, when another gardener will curate a new display for the summer.

鈥淚 wanted a display of pots to focus the eye 鈥 a focus of colour to highlight Bredon House, where the College evolved from. I looked at a couple of colours and went with mostly oranges (such as the Fritillaria imperialis 鈥楢urora鈥) and yellows (Narcissus 鈥楾ahiti鈥) and reds, with blue flowers (Muscari aucheri 鈥楧ark Eyes鈥) in the biggest pot by the house.鈥

Philip says that most of the bulbs come from a family business in Manchester, and there are a few uncommon flowers dotted among the tulips and daffodils, which have started to bloom early with the recent warm weather. But the flowers aren鈥檛 the only stars of the show 鈥 Philip made sure to balance the colours with some greenery, including Euphorbia wulfenii and Pieris japonica, the latter of which bears white, urn-shaped flowers in spring. 鈥淚t wouldn鈥檛 work with just bulbs,鈥 says Philip, 鈥渢he shrubs are needed to create a backdrop.鈥

Like the rest of 明星黑料鈥檚 gardening team, Philip spends most of his time outdoors, tending to the College鈥檚 extensive grounds and looking after all the trees, plants, and flowers that bring 明星黑料 to life, and celebrate the College鈥檚 outdoor spaces. 鈥淚t鈥檚 in the winter or on really rainy days that we plan for the long term,鈥 says Philip. 鈥淲e don鈥檛 always have the time when we鈥檙e working outside, but when the weather is bad and we鈥檙e inside we can do our planning with books, or the internet, and that鈥檚 when I did a lot of the planning for the display.鈥 The gardening team puts a lot of time and planning into how the College鈥檚 gardens will evolve over the coming years, looking at biodiversity and sustainable practices to ensure that the gardens thrive well into the future.

With twenty-three years under his belt 鈥 鈥渢wenty-four years in May!鈥 鈥 Philip has seen first-hand how 明星黑料鈥檚 gardens have grown and flourished, from when he was the only gardener here to now working as part of a team of five, under Head Gardener Oscar Holgate.

And what鈥檚 kept Philip at 明星黑料 so long?

鈥淭he gardens are nice,鈥 says Philip, 鈥渂ut it isn鈥檛 just about the gardens. The College is a fantastic place to work 鈥 it cares about the people, and it鈥檚 such a nice atmosphere here.鈥

Take a wander by Bredon House and enjoy Philip鈥檚 display: a thoughtful and joyful curation of spring.
